Classical music as a pain reliever? Yes, actually.

by Dr. Michael Bühler

Not just for lovers of the cultural pages, but for the nervous system.

The evidence is remarkably unpoetic:
Music can reduce pain, lower stress and measurably influence physiological regulation.
Among the observed effects are a slower heart rate, higher heart rate variability, and changes in brain areas associated with pain.

In other words:
Mozart is good for more than cultural capital.
In the right context, he can even help provide relief.

And yet, in many hospitals and care facilities, music is still treated like decorative room ambience with a soundtrack — pleasant, but optional.

Perhaps it is time to change that.
Fewer reflexive pills. More evidence-based time signatures.

We continue our research.
